Residential Sump Pumps and Their Importance to Your Home

Residential Sump Pumps ImportanceSump pumps are incredibly important when it comes to the maintenance and upkeep of your home. But what exactly is a sump pump? A sump pump tends to be used in houses where basement flooding happens regularly.

Sump pumps are installed to send water away from a house to any place where it is no longer problematic, such as a municipal storm drain or a dry well.

Nobody wants an intrusion of water in their home, as it can cause molding, mildew, rot, and many other negative things.

What Does a Sump Pump Consist of?

A sump pump is usually made up of a float switch and a mechanical pump. The entire mechanism is placed in what’s known as a sump pit at the lowest level of your home’s basement. When moisture leaks into the basement, this means that the water level rises, eventually lifting the float switch high enough to activate the pump in order to drain the water. The water is then pumped out of the basement through a discharge pipe to a more suitable location.

Without an effective sump pump, your home could become severely flooded and damaged. However, it’s important to note that if you do plan on installing one, always use trusted professionals such as Pratt Plumbing.
